The owners of Mountain Living’s 2010 Home of the Year loved the home KH Webb designed for them but were looking for a dramatic change from mountain rustic to sleek contemporary. Rockledge, built into the side of a mountain on a steep lot, gave them a six-bedroom retreat with stunning views, contemporary elegance, and ski-in ski-out access the Vail slopes. The steepness of the lot presented a design challenge that we turned into an asset by creating a home that appears to emerge naturally from the mountain. The home uses vast windows throughout to offer mountain views and plenty of natural light throughout. The cantilevered dining room almost feels as if it is outdoors, floating into its mountain environment. With panoramic views of both the ski slope and Gore Range, the master suite offers a beautiful retreat. The en suite bathroom features his and hers showers and other fixtures for elegant luxury in a livable space. The main living space centers around a fireplace custom designed with a commissioned stainless steel sculpture. In this space, the walnut beams and flooring create both warmth and grandeur while the stone and glass offer a clean, contemporary feel. With two outdoor terraces, this home is designed to make the most of the outdoor living and entertaining that Colorado is known for.
